Dear Parents,

RE: Academic Year 2018-19

Welcome to the new academic year at King’s College Murcia and greetings to all our new pupils and parents. I am very much looking forward to the year ahead and working with you and your children, as they continue along their learning journey with us.

School Developments

As your children have been enjoying a good rest during the summer, we have been hard at work making considerable improvements to our school’s environment. These include a new football pitch and playground; re-painting and decorating; new classrooms, including a kiln room, and other building repairs and maintenance. Also, you will have noticed that a number of trees have been ‘pollarded’ in order to promote better growth for the future.

As with last year, all pupils from Key Stage 1 upwards will be enjoying their break-times at the same time. Pupils from Key Stage 2 upwards will be utilising the new play area in order to limit the wear-and-tear of the new astroturf pitch.

Summer school was extremely successful this year with record student numbers.

In contrast to the hard work going on in the building during the summer break, we have had an uneventful summer with regards to staff recruitment, with all our new staff having been recruited in February and March.  Due to the expansion of the Secondary department, the new teachers are: Mr Wilmshurst for Maths and Miss Thompson for MFL. Additionally in Secondary, we welcome Miss Guilar for English; Dr O’Brien for Physics;  Mr Hope for ICT;  and Mr MacFarlane to cover Mrs Green’s maternity leave. Also, Miss Campbell and Miss Toomey for Primary and Mrs Wilmshurst (part-time) in Nursery.

I am sure you will join me in welcoming them all to our family here in Murcia.

To remind you, our internal appointments announced in June were:

  • Mr Snowden as Deputy Head
  • Mr Morter-Laing as Head of 6th Form
  • Miss Toomey – Head of Key Stage 2
  • Mrs Mirfield – Secondary SENCO
  • Miss Wilson – Head of Humanities
  • Mr Perez – Especificas facilitator

Also, I should mention, that certain job titles have changed to reflect more accurately the responsibilities of the incumbent staff. These are:

  • Primary Teaching and Learning Coordinator – Mrs Cassidy
  • Head of Wellbeing and Pastoral Lead – Mr Green
  • Head of Arts – Miss Williams

Mrs Stackhouse will be continuing as our Head of Primary as will Miss Kirlew as our Head of EYFS.

Exam Results

All our pupils and their teachers should be congratulated for the exam results achieved at King’s College this year. Our A-level results were very good indeed, with an overall pass rate of 95%, with some notable achievements – Daniel receiving 2A*s and 2As for his four A-levels and all our pupils entering ‘Especificas’ passed well.

Our pupils once again did extremely well in their (I)GCSE examinations, achieving our best ever overall pass rate of 96% A* – C, higher than the UK average of 66.9%, and an increase on last year. There were some notable individual results, particularly Kate R who received 9 GCSEs, all of which were in excess of an A grade, Catherine K 10 GCSEs in excess of A and Anastasia 9 in excess of A. So congratulations to them and, indeed, to all our examinees. You can find the detailed breakdown of our results on our website:

I am immensely proud of our pupils’ achievements and we will be striving, as ever, to maintain academic excellence as we continue to nurture world-ready learners. As I mentioned above, your children will be benefiting from a number of school improvements and innovations which, I am sure, will only go on to enhance your child’s excellent learning experience at our school.

So, welcome back once again and also a warm welcome to all the new pupils and new staff joining our Murcian family!
