On Wednesday the 7th of June, King´s College Murcia held the annual swimming gala at San Javier Polideportivo. The weather was perfect and the pool was in pristine condition for a day that was to consist of 120 races.

In our biggest event yet, it was exciting to implement a real gala system which included heats and finals for all age groups. The morning started with the freestyle heats and there was some excellent swimmers across all age groups. Year 3 were first off with great swims from Celia and Letizia in their first gala. Other noticeable performances included Nicolas from Year 4, Julia from Year 6 and Alejandro M from Year 5.

Secondary were next up with their freestyle events and it was really competitive across all the heats and it was encouraging to see the ever improving standard. Highlights included Isabella F, Juan S, and Pablo P with Adrian R.

Next up we had a few fun races for some of the younger children including using floats and surfboards, and had some different strokes including breaststroke and backstroke. Once again these events were performed very well with an outstanding level of technique shown by various students including Alejandro M, Brodie S, Marta C and Eugenia S.

Just before the relays we had the finals and it was really exciting to see the top 6 swimmers from each category battle it out for a medal. The stand out swimmers of the day took some excellent victories. This included Alejandro M, Brodie S and Isabella F. The battle of the day was probably between the upper age group boys in the freestyle. Adrian R and Pablo P, fresh from competing together at the COBIS games, pushed each other to the absolute limit with Pablo edging out Adrian.

To finish off the day we had the relays, with Gaudi house, the specialists in relays it appears, taking many of the victories! As the scores were totaled up, Gaudi house took a deserved victory edging out Newton into second place with Churchill and Cervantes 3rd and 4th respectively.

Once again, many thanks to all the parents who came to support, and the tireless members of staff who made the day very special. A big thank you as well to our student sports leadership team, who proved themselves once again, to be a credit to the school.
