On Wednesday the 20th of September, King’s College Murcia held its 3rd inter-house triathlon. Participation in the event has been growing ever since it started but this year was the most exciting one yet. With nearly 100 students competing, the atmosphere was electric with more and more students taking on the individual challenge each year. It was these students who set off first in the pool with each wave containing a particular category or year group. The course consisted of a swim in the La Torre pool, a 2km cycle route with varying laps depending on category, and a 1.7km run. The first individual students home were Alfonso B, Rodrigo D, Sofia C, Pablo P and Claudia F in their respective categories, so huge congratulations.
Many of the students involved had no experience in triathlon which made it even more encouraging to see them involved. Some of these students took on the individual challenge as mentioned above, whilst others decided for the team relay. This category is always very exciting with one student swimming, another cycling and the third student running. Highlights of this group include Daniel, Toby and Ciaran in Cervantes and Marta, Victoria and Natalia for the 9/10 girls category.
As usual, the teachers at KC Murcia are always keen to get involved both marshaling and racing. We had 3 staff teams this year with many teachers pushing themselves hard. Particular highlights included Mr McIntyre’s rapid swimming, Mr Turner’s cycling on a bike a few sizes too small for him, and Miss Williams showing the riders how it’s done.
A special mention must go to Pablo Pintado in Year 10, who once again broke his own course record which now stands at 16 minutes and 30 seconds. He has shown huge progress over the years.
Many thanks go to the La Torre security and the local Police force who kept the event extremely safe and helped make it the spectacle that it was.
